This project involved the complete removal of a large mature willow tree in Plymouth that had significantly outgrown its location between two residential properties. Over the years, the tree had become too large for the small gardens it occupied, blocking natural light from both homes and extending over the main railway line to London.

With neighbouring houses, overhead telephone lines, and an active railway all surrounding the tree, the dismantling process required careful planning and controlled rigging techniques to ensure every section was removed safely.

The Challenge

The willow had become a dominant feature within the gardens, casting heavy shade over both properties and reducing the amount of natural light reaching the homes and outdoor spaces. While improving light levels was the customer's main objective, the tree also presented several safety concerns due to its size and location.

One of the most significant hazards was the proximity of the busy railway line running directly alongside the property. Any uncontrolled branch or timber falling towards the tracks could have caused serious disruption and created a major safety risk.

Access to the property was another challenge. The only route to the rear gardens was via an extremely narrow lane that left just a few inches of clearance on either side of our compact specialist tipper truck. Fortunately, our smaller vehicle was able to reach the site, allowing us to position our wood chipper much closer to the work area. Without this setup, every branch would have needed to be carried a much greater distance by hand, considerably increasing the time and labour involved.

The work area itself offered very little room for error. A telephone line bordered one side of the designated drop zone, while the railway line lay immediately beyond the other. With neighbouring homes surrounding the site, there was no opportunity to free-fall branches or timber.

Adding to the complexity, the work was carried out during wet weather, meaning additional care was required while climbing to maintain safe footing and secure positioning throughout the dismantling process.

The Solution

Before any cutting began, we carefully assessed the site and developed a dismantling plan that allowed every section of the willow to be lowered safely into a small, controlled landing zone beneath the tree.

Using professional rigging equipment, each branch and limb was lowered under control rather than being allowed to fall freely. This method ensured every piece avoided the nearby telephone line, neighbouring properties, and the adjacent railway line.

The tree was dismantled gradually from the crown down, with each section cut into manageable sizes that could safely fit within the limited landing area. Once on the ground, the timber was manually dragged through the narrow access lane to our chipper before being processed.

After the crown had been removed, the main stem was dismantled in stages and cut into rounds that could be safely carried by hand back to the vehicle. Working methodically in this way allowed us to maintain complete control throughout the operation while protecting the surrounding property and infrastructure.

Rather than allowing any of the material to go to waste, we arranged for the woodchip and timber to be reused locally. The woodchip was supplied to a nearby landowner for use as garden mulch, while the larger logs were retained as firewood, ensuring the material continued to provide value long after the project was completed.

Every tree presents its own unique challenges, and careful planning is essential. On this project, adapting our equipment, selecting the correct rigging techniques, and working systematically allowed us to complete the removal safely despite the restricted access and numerous surrounding hazards.

The Results

The mature willow was successfully removed without damage to the surrounding properties, telephone lines, or the adjacent railway.

By carefully rigging every section of the tree and making full use of our compact access vehicle, we were able to complete the project efficiently despite the restricted working area and poor weather conditions.

Removing the tree dramatically increased the amount of natural light reaching both gardens and neighbouring homes, creating a brighter and more enjoyable outdoor space for everyone affected.

The customer was delighted with the transformation, while the neighbouring property also benefited from the additional light created by the removal. As always, the site was left clean, tidy, and ready for immediate use.
